GD-Lighting Design illuminates MOCAPE |
|
G-D Lighting Design has revealed its architectural lighting design for the Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition (MOCAPE) in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China.
The building, designed by Austrian architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au, unites the Museum of Contemporary Arts and the Urban Planning Exhibition halls.
The two structures are surrounded by a uniquely designed exterior consisting of shards of glass and stone that extend and twist along the steel structure, to create a complex and unique facade to connect the two buildings.
The fragmented shapes that form the exterior proved to be a challenge to light however, with lighting designers Yenchin Wang, Hui Ren and Tim Cheng having to find a solution to glare and self-illumination caused by the convex and concave corners of the structure.
They found the solution to these issues with the use of building information modelling (BIM) and CAD programme Rhino. The use of both BIM and Rhino allowed the designers to seamlessly integrate the lighting design into the building and its facade.
By constructing a 1:1 digital architectural model of the MOCAPE in Rhino the designers were able to accurately map lighting positions across the face of the building and successfully trial lighting designs.
They were also able to analyse photometrics, power supplies, material reflectance and adjust the design accordingly.
The design incorporates U-shaped shading grooves with exterior baffles, custom made for the project, which were used to to block glare, while the groove interior was painted matte black to reduce self-illumination.
GD-Lighting Design is a Hong Kong based lighting design company, founded in 2004 by Yenchin Wang.
