Dutch construction firm Bright Buildings is creating a transparent swimming facility with a retractable roof and walls that will produce "an attractive transition from indoor to outdoor activities.”
The company, which specialises in building “daylight structures”, is building the new 1,000sq m (10,000sq ft) health and swimming complex for Dutch holiday park Eiland van Maurik. The park’s operators want to encourage more guests to use its pool facility, and to spend longer periods of time there.
On fine days the ‘Open Sky’ roof of the building will automatically retract up to 50 per cent of its total area to admit sunshine, daylight and fresh air, increasing natural ventilation. Meanwhile it’s transparent ‘Skywalls’ will also opened and closed vertically whenever the need arises.
According to Bright Buildings, the use of the retractable walls and roof allows leisure operators to lengthen their seasons. In a statement, the company said: “For swimming pools and water parks that are dependent on fine weather, this type of transparent structure may make all the difference between a disappointing season and a top season.
“Leisure facilities are a lot more profitable if they can be used more intensively, and the optimum insulation, fast heating of the water and less use of water-treatment products imply savings in costs.
“With the retractable Open Sky roof and walls you can also create a natural transition from indoor to outdoor activities, and the other way round.”
The Eiland van Maurik pool facility is set to open in Q1 2017.
